Sacramento attorneys Steve Plesser (l) and Mark Reichel
SACRAMENTO, CA - The family of 8-year-old murder victim Leila Fowler has hired a well-known Sacramento law firm to represent Leila's brother, who is charged with the killing.
Mark Reichel and Steve Plesser met with the 12-year-old boy for the first time Tuesday in the juvenile detention facility where he's being held.
"He's actually doing very well right now," Reichel said. "As well as can be expected in these really difficult times."
The pair expect to ask the juvenile court judge to allow the boy to return to his family based on his cooperation with authorities.
"We don't know if that's going to be a possibility, but we hope that it is," Reichel said.
Leila's brother was arrested Saturday, two weeks after he claimed a man attacked his sister in their Valley Springs home.
Plesser said the family has asked for privacy and is especially upset that some media outlets are using the name and pictures of the boy.
"I'm hoping that people will find it in them to have enough empathy for this family to realize the nightmare that they're living right now."
