RIO LINDA, Calif. - A man is in custody and a homicide investigation underway following a standoff with Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies and SWAT members in Rio Linda Wednesday morning.
Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a property on Lilac Lane in Rio Linda around 5:30 a.m., after receiving a call from a man claiming he had shot and killed his roommate, said Sergeant Jason Ramos
Deputies surrounded the home and were able to establish intermittent contact with the man, but could not convince him to surrender, Ramos said.
SWAT was subsequently called to the scene to assist.
Residents in several neighboring homes were evacuated during the standoff, said Ramos.
According to Ramos, the man exited the home at arpproximately 9:45 a.m. with his hands behind his head and surrendered.
After the man was taken into custody, authorities entered the home and located a woman shot to death in the back bedroom of the property, said Ramos.
The suspect was identified as Stephen Brainard, 58. He was interviewed by detectives and then transported to Sacramento County Jail.
The incident is now being investigated as a homicide.
