SACRAMENTO - On Monday, a judge is expected to weigh in on a local custody case that has captivated people from Sacramento to Russia.

Sacramento County Child Protective Services removed baby Sammy Nikolayev from his parents' custody last Wednesday, after Anna and Alex Nikolayev took him out of Sutter Memorial Hospital without proper discharge.

Anna Nikolayev said she was taking her son to Kaiser Permanente after being displeased with the treatment her 5-month-old baby was receiving at Sutter Memorial Hospital, and was completely stunned by CPS' decision to take her son.

But CPS contends they removed the boy due to "severe neglect."

The case has received international attention since unfolding nearly a week ago, with the couple's story being featured on Russian television, and garnering interest from German media outlets.

Regardless of how the judge finds in the case, CPS is likely to receive a great deal more attention  - and scrutiny - following the announcement.
