VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. - Calaveras County sheriff's deputies and detectives continue to search for the man believed to be responsible for the death of an 8-year-old girl on Saturday afternoon.

Deputies say Leila Fowler's 12-year-old brother saw an older white or Mexican man in a dark shirt enter his family's home Saturday night. After he called his parents for help, the boy found his sister Leila dead and the intruder running off on foot.

Arriving deputies first focused their investigation on a short stretch of Rippon Road near the home where the girl was killed.

Sunday, the Calaveras County coroner confirmed the victim had been stabbed to death.

The girl's mother, Crystal Walters, said in a statement to CNN:
We are devastated. She didn't deserve this. She was full of Life."

Investigators said they have DNA and fingerprints to aid them in the search for the person responsible.

Austin Fritz, who knows the victim's sister, said, "We're friends with the girl who got harmed, her older sister. Nice family. You know you don't expect something like this to happen to them."

Neighbors said they have a neighborhood watch group in place but nobody recalled seeing a stranger come through in recent days. They did say the neighborhood contains many foreclosed homes and they suspected deputies would check each one.

Vigil planned

Organizers say there will be a vigil in remembrance of Leila Fowler on Tuesday at Jenny Lind Elementary School where the victim had classes. It begins at 7 p.m.
