VALLEY SPRINGS, CA - A 24-hour tip line has been set up as part of the investigation into the murder of a 8-year-old girl Saturday in Valley Springs.
Those who have information about the case are asked to call (209) 754-6030. Investigators are seeking details about anyone who may have unexplained injuries or who have left town unexpectedly after the crime was reported.
Sheriff deputies responded to a home on Rippon Road home Saturday after a 12-year-old boy called his parents and said there was an intruder in the home. The parents called 911 and Calaveras County sheriff's deputies responded.
The boy, who was home alone with his 8-year-old sister, told investigators he went into another room in the home where he discovered his sister with severe injuries. The girl was transported to a hospital where she later died. The boy was not injured.
Investigators have not released the type of injuries the girl sustained, but do say that it does not appear that she was shot.
The boy described the intruder as a white or Hispanic man who is 6-feet tall and has a muscular build. He was last seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and blue pants.
The sheriff's office said the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. Residents are being warned by Reverse 911 and Nixle mass notification to lock their doors and to report suspicious activity.
Anyone who sees a man matching the suspect description is urged to call 911.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are continuing to search the Valley Springs area. Investigators also are interviewing several people. There are no suspects in custody.
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office will hold a press conference about the investigation at 3 p.m. Sunday.
