STOCKTON, CA - A man is dead after being shot in a downtown Stockton neighborhood Saturday.

Stockton police responded to the 400 block of W. Flora Street around 11 a.m. to reports of a shooting.

At the scene, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound on the street. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Officer Joe Silva said.

"Officers were able to detain a possible shooter in regards to this shooting. On scene. And he was brought down to our detective annex," Silva said.

Neighbors said they heard screaming from a man standing at the corner of the street. Residents said he was yelling a barrage of expletives and other incoherent comments.

"I called the police and I said, 'there's a guy just going off, going crazy,' and the police said we'll get there when we can," neighbor Mary Granadoz said. "And in not even 5 minutes there were two shots."

Before the shooting, neighbors said the man walked over to a nearby apartment complex. Silva said that's where the man was shot. Detectives believe the alleged shooter is a man in his 50s. At this time, police said a possible motive for the shooting is self-defense.

It is unclear if the man detained by police has been released.
