Team Alpha Male Head Coach Duane Ludwig watches over practice.
SACRAMENTO, CA - The new face walking among top UFC figthers like Urijah Faber, Chad Mendes, Josesph Benadvidez, Danny Castillo and T.J. Dillashaw seems to fit right in.
Duane "Bang" Ludwig arrived in January, but he didn't come to Sacramento to fight. Ludwig was hired by Urijah Faber to become the new head coach of Team Alpha Male.
"He is a hard worker and that was the most important thing we needed on our team, someone who has his eye on the big picture to build this program for the long term for young guys coming up and for guys who here right now. We need a guy who is just focused on training us," Faber told News10.
Ludwig comes with serious credentials. A veteran of the UFC with 35 mixed martial arts bouts, more than 50 Muay Thai fights including several championships. But what he is most known for is his 2006 knockout of Johnathan Goulet considered the fastest KO in the history of the UFC.
"The UFC made it official, they went back and timed it at 6.06 seconds, so I have the fastest knockout in the UFC history which is pretty cool," said Ludwig.
Today, Ludwig now runs the team practices, watches fight tape and helps game plan for all the fighters.
"I knew there was a couple of things I could help with, not that they were doing anything wrong but add a few things to their game," Ludwig said. "I'm adding a little more thought process to them, why certain things work and don't work in scenarios and situations. I'm adding more detail and science to the game."
So far Ludwig's knowledge has worked. Team Alpha Male is undefeated at (10-0) in professional and amateur fights including three wins in the UFC.
On February 16th, Danny Castillo won by unanimous decision over Paul Sass in London.
Urijah Faber defeated Ivan Menjivar by rear naked choke at UFC 157 in Anaheim on February 27th.
And at UFC 158 in March, T.J. Dillashaw scored a 2nd round knockout of Issei Tamura with a left kick to the head.
"Duane was telling me the left kick was there, he (Tamura) was circling into it. I set it up, but Duane was the one who told me it was there and 30 seconds into the second round it was perfect," said Dillashaw.
"It is pretty easy for me, I have a calm perspective watching and relaxing and analyzing," Ludwig said about coaching from the fighters corner. "I have a clear though process, I relay the information and he (Dillashaw) was the one who chose to execute to the move, I just asked him to do it, it is like a video game."
The month of April, Ludwig and Team Alpha Male will have a chance to add four more wins to their record. Faber will fight Scott Jorgenson at the Ultimate Fighter Finale in Las Vegas on April 13th. And in San Jose on UFC on Fox, Chad Mendes will fight Duane Elkins, Joseph Benavides will face Darren Uyenoyama and Dillashaw fights Hugo Viana on April 20th.
