SACRAMENTO, CA - It wasn't clear what prompted a man to go after his neighbor with a large knife, cutting him numerous times.
The victim had left his dog with 66-year-old Gary Watkins overnight and when he tried to retrieve the dog, Watkins chased and attacked him, according to Sacramento police.
Neighbors to the assault on the 3800 block of 9th Avenue just before noon Friday described the knife as a machete; police said it was a large knife or a sword.
Officers said the victim was able to get the weapon away from Watkins and run to a nearby fire station to get help. He was taken to an area hospital for medical treatment for what police described as moderate injuries.
Watkins was arrested and booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
