STOCKTON, CA - Despite their efforts, police and fire department personnel couldn't save a man who walked into the water at the downtown Stockton waterfront Thursday afternoon and apparently drowned.
According to the Stockton police report, officers were sent to the area to check on a man acting suspiciously. However, when the patrol unit arrived, the man ran off. Officers found him again as he went into and started swimming away.
An officer dove into the water to go after the man but couldn't find him.
Fire water rescue personnel also arrived and entered the water to find the man unresponsive 20 minutes later.
The man was later pronounced dead. His name wasn't going to be released until family was notified.
