SACRAMENTO, CA - Some parents want to know why it took so long to report an alleged sexual assault at Grant Union High School last month to Sacramento police.
Those parents who learned about the incident from a News10 report, demanded answers Tuesday night at the Twin Rivers Unified School District board meeting.
Angry parents voiced concerns about mandatory reporting. They wanted to know why the alleged incident that happened at Grant High on Dec. 5, wasn't brought to the Sacramento Police Department's attention immediately.
The school district said Sacramento police learned of the incident from Twin Rivers police a week later.
"We've not heard a verbal or written response from Principal Craig Murray with an explanation as to what prompted or caused the delay," said Greg Jefferson. "We took a vote of no confidence meeting last Saturday and we're asking the board and the superintendent to immediately remove the Principal Murray as principal of grant high school."
Protesting parents claim that the mandatory reporter was the principal and that he needed to directly inform police first, not necessarily the school police.
A handful of parents criticized the delay in reporting the alleged incident to Sacramento police. One parent, however, said the board and other parents needed to hear more facts before blaming the principal.
"We are jumping to conclusions without being given all the information," community member Darrell Roberts said. "It is not fair to name Grant High administrators without them being given due process. None of us were."
The district responded Tuesday night saying that it takes mandate reporting requirements very seriously.
And, in a statement released to News10 last month, the school district spokeswoman said that if their investigation determines that the mandated reporting violations were violated, the district will take appropriate action.
