COPPEROPOLIS, CA - His plan was to drive a golf cart he stole 109 miles, from a home in Angels Camp to Citrus Heights; however, his plan was thwarted by a wrong turn.

John Scott Vishion, 46, was arrested by California Highway Patrol early morning Tuesday near Copperopolis on State Route 4 for a DUI, driving a "Club Car" golf car, Angels Camp police Chief Todd Fordahl said.

Residents at a home on Smith Flat Road in the Greenhorn Creek subdivision in Angels Camp awoke on New Year's Day to find someone had stolen their golf cart, golf clubs and five bottles of champagne sometime after 11:40 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

Vishion, who was staying at the Trendwest Wyndham Resort in Angels Camo, left the resort after an argument and began walking. When he saw the golf cart in the garage, Vishion unplugged it, loaded it with several bottles of champagne and began driving, Fordahl said.

Instead of heading towards Citrus Heights on State Route 4, Vishion took a wrong turn and got lost. CHP caught up with Vishion about 13.5 miles into his journey.

Fordahl said Vishion admitted to police and CHP that he stole the cart and his plan to drive it home.

Vishion was booked into Calaveras County Jail for DUI and felony counts of burglary, theft of a vehicle, possession of stolen property, and grand theft, Fordahl said.

Vishion said he was lucky he didn't get into a crash while driving the golf cart.

On Jan. 4, Vishion's wife Maryann released the following statement apologizing for her husband's actions:

"On behalf of my husband's inconsiderate, reckless actions towards everyone, the homeowner, anyone driving on the streets, and police officers on duty, as his wife and two adult children, we do not condone or excuse his actions. All we can do is offer our deepest apologies to everyone. Now he can move forward on getting the help he needs."
