Modesto names new police chief

MODESTO, CA - The city of Modesto has a new police chief.

Galen Carroll, who was most recently the north patrol commander of the Long Beach Police Department, will officially take over Modesto's police department Jan. 8, 2013, City Manager Greg Nyhoff announced.

Carroll has served more than 18 years with the Long Beach police force. He has a Master of Arts degree in organizational leadership, a Bachelor of Science degree in business management and is a graduate of the FBI's academy.

Nycoff said Carroll stood out from other candidates.

"He is well-grounded, has great integrity, intelligence and an all-around solid candidate," Nyhoff stated in a news release. "In addition to ranking the highest in the process, Galen has a command presence that will be well received by the police department."

Carroll's annual salary will be $175,000.
