SACRAMENTO - A city on the verge of possibly losing its professional basketball team to Virginia Beach is getting a lifeline from a professional soccer league.

At a Monday morning press conference in downtown Sacramento, a group of city officials, including Mayor Kevin Johnson, local business leaders and members of the local sports community revealed that Sacramento would be home to a new professional soccer team.

The new team will play in the United Soccer League (USL) Pro Division beginning in the 2014 season. They will likely play their home games at Sacramento's Hughes Stadium.

The following 11 teams currently make up the USL Pro Division :

Antigua Barracuda FC
Charleston Battery
Charlotte Eagles
Dayton Dutch Lions
Harrisburg City Islanders
Los Angeles Blues
Orlando City
Pittsburgh Riverhounds
Richmond Kickers
Rochester Rhinos
Wilmington Hammerheads

Soccer fans disappointed by the fact Sacramento did not land an MLS team, can take solace in the fact that two teams, the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps, have made the jump from the the second tier of American professional soccer to the country's major league.
