CALAVERAS COUNTY, CA - A Calaveras County woman who died in a horrible fire back in 1991 may have been killed by her husband for her life insurance policy, according to police. Investigators are revisiting the case after that same man was recently charged with killing his own son in New York to collect his life insurance money.
Police believe Christena Karlsen may have died because of a fire intentionally set by Karl Karlsen in 1991 near Murphy's. Art Alexander spoke exclusively with News10 Monday night. He had a strong suspicion that his son-in-law was to blame for his daughter, Christena's death.
Karlsen claimed that he managed to save their three children.
According to Alexander, Karlsen then collected $200,000 from his wife's life insurance policy and used it to buy a family farm in New York.
This past weekend, New York police told Alexander that Karlsen was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Karlsen is accused of killing his own son back in 2008 and collecting his life insurance policy.
Police are now looking into the fatal fire that killed Christena Karlsen.
"I knew he was guilty a long time ago. 20 years ago," said Alexander.
But he never told anyone because he was afraid he'd lose contact with his grandchildren.
Alexander said he always worried that Karlsen would hurt someone else for money and get away with it.
According to Alexander, Karlsen had also once set fire to his car because he couldn't afford to make the car payments. Karlsen never got caught for that.
"I thought that I would see him skate for the rest of his life. I'm sorry it took this long. But I'm glad to see it happening," said Alexander about re-investigating his daughter's death and Karlsen's arrest.
An investigator from New York will be flying out to interview Alexander and other witnesses.
Alexander said he has been angry for the past 20 years and he's ready for it to be over.
