SONORA, CA - An off-duty correctional officer's gun went off in a Sonora movie theater Friday, according police.
One person later claimed to have been struck by bullet fragments but that person hasn't come forward, according to the Sonora Police Department report.
The incident took place at approximately 4:47 Friday afternoon at the Regal 10 Cinemas on Sanguinetti Road.
According to the correctional officer, a sergeant with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, he was adjusting his concealed, off-duty firearm holster while walking in a theater aisle when he somehow disengaged the safety strap of the holster and depressed the gun trigger, resulting in a shot being fired.
A check of the theater determined the bullet tore through an armrest of a movie seat and then fell to the floor.
Police said the correctional officer's gun was confiscated and his superiors were notified of the incident and investigating.
