SODA SPRINGS, CA - The snow and the temperatures combined to let Boreal Mountain Ski Resort open its slopes for the season Saturday afternoon. The resort will now be open every day from 9 am to 9 pm for the winter.
"It's a beautiful thing," said skier Jimmy Moore, "when we get to open before Thanksgiving!"
The snow-making machines were working overtime Saturday and the lines at the chair lift were long.
"I'm stoked!" exclaimed Erica Klenk, "I've been waiting to ski since May. It's my favorite thing!"
Her friend, Jenna Rhoads agreed.
"Yeh," she said, "living up here means skiing is a big thing so having this be open is really fun!"
It was the first time this season that pro skier Tanner Hall had hit the slopes.
"You know, you can't really complain when you have this type of snow and this type of storm early in the season to get everybody stoked," Hall said, "getting people buying skis, renting skis to keep our industry alive because last year was definitely a different year!"
And how was the snow?
"It is light and fluffy," said Jody Churich, spokeswoman for Boreal, "this is champagne powder just like you get in Utah. It's pretty amazing!"
