WOODLAND, CA - A man is dead after trying to cross the freeway near Woodland Friday night.
The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on State Route 113, north of Gibson, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Andy Hill said.
Two men collected cans on the shoulder of the freeway when one of them ran across the northbound lanes. Hill said the man told his friend to follow.
The second man was crossing the freeway, when he ran in front of a Ford Focus in the fast lane and was hit. Hill said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hill said alcohol and speed are not a factor in the case of the driver, but alcohol is believed to have played a role in the actions of the pedestrian.
The other man is cooperating with CHP; Hill said he may face charges since he was intoxicated and encouraged his friend to cross the freeway.
