MODESTO, CA - Crews investigate a Level 3 HAZMAT situation at a Modesto bank Friday evening.

A man in his 30s, who has been there before, entered the Chase Bank on Tully Road and Standiford Avenue just after 3 p.m. and handed the teller a lot of money wrapped in a paper towel to make a deposit, Modesto Fire Battalion Chief Johanson said.

Three tellers who came in contact with the money quickly showed signs of rash and itching; three others also showed symptoms of irritation.

Johanson said six people were sent to the hospital as a precaution.

The bank was evacuated, Johanson said, when crews went inside to investigate. HAZMAT removed the money from the bank and are trying to determine the material that was on it.

The man who brought in the money was not arrested, but authorities remain in contact with him because they have not determined if he meant to hurt anyone.

The FBI is headed to the area to look into the incident; they may or may not take over the case depending on what material was on the money.
