Modesto police search Mancini Park after reports of an assault.
MODESTO, CA - A mom and her child were assaulted at a Modesto park Thursday afternoon.
Modesto police received a call about an assault at Mancini Park around 2:45 p.m. after a woman and her 1-year-old toddler and 8-year-old child were approached by a man they didn't know, Lt. Rick Armendariz said.
The man assaulted the woman and one of the children. When people nearby intervened, the man ran from the scene.
The mom was violently sexually assaulted by the man and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Armendariz said. The child was physically assaulted and suffered minor injuries.
"The kids are fine. They're safe," Armendariz said. "One of them was possibly physically assaulted, but it appears that assault was minor in nature."
Officers and K9 units were used to search for the suspect; they also searched homes surrounding the park.
Around 4:40 p.m., officers ended their search. Police said the department will now focus on the investigation into the case.
