STOCKTON, CA - The city of Stockton had its 51st homicide Saturday night. According to the victim's relatives, 36-year old Art Aguayo was gunned down in front of his home.

Family members said Aguayo was a father of 8 children who was turning his life around and working as a freelance tattoo artist. He was about to graduate from Delta College and was working to become a nurse.

At a vigil Sunday night, family members said Aguayo was determined to leave his old life behind.

"I was proud of him, very, very proud of him. Because he was trying to turn his life around and lose his bad friends and get new friends, and better himself," his mother, Angelina Aguayo,  said through an interpreter.

According to Stockton Police, Aguayo answered a knock at the door around 11:15 Saturday night on the 7700 block of Santa Ines Court. That's when he was shot in the upper body. Aguayo became Stockton's 51st murder victim this year.

"It's just sad," said Neighbor Annabel Trevino. "51 is a terrible number. But 1 life is the same as 1 life. I think (the violence) is just getting worse. And something needs to happen."

Family members said Aguayo wanted others to follow his example.

"He pushed me into graduating...and for him, I'm gonna live my dream," said his sister in law, Josephine White-Horseley.

Those close to Aguayo said he was aware his past life might catch up to him.

"He always told me, 'mom, I reap what I sow.' And we all do. We all gonna. That's why we're supposed to live a righteous life," said his mother in law, Melissa Cuevas.

Police still don't know the motive for last night's shooting. They have very limited information about the suspect. Anyone with information should call Stockton police.
