WWE wrestler CM Punk hits fan at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento.
SACRAMENTO, CA - William Moss didn't realize what he captured video at a WWE show at Power Balance Pavilion Monday night until the incident started getting national attention.
"At that point, I was just like, 'oh my dear God, CM Punk just smacked a dude in the head,'" Moss said.
Moss was in the audience enjoying the show when WWE wrestler CM Punk jumped into the crowd, where fans started shoving and even punching the entertainer. That's when Punk struck back.
Security at the arena is a combination of personnel from the venue and the event, but in a statement, the WWE takes responsibility for what went wrong.
"WWE security was unfortunately not in the appropriate place at the time ... WWE regrets that proper security measures were not in place, and CM Punk apologizes for reacting in the heat of the moment."
Even with the whole thing caught on camera, who is to blame remains a matter of heated debate among fans. In an interview posted on YouTube, the fan who seemed to get the worst of it suggested that Punk hit the wrong guy.
"It just doesn't seem like it would be something that you would do," the fan said. "At least if you knew, I mean if you knew for 100 percent, that it was that exact person."
Investigators with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department confirm they did interview the fan hit Monday night, but they said he does not consider himself a victim and showed no sign of physical injury. As far as they're concerned, there is no investigation.
With that in mind, Moss has some advice for that fan.
"Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame because now you can say you got punched by CM Punk," Moss said.
