BUTTE COUNTY, CA - A father and his infant son tragically lost their lives in what was supposed to be a fun outing in Biggs on Saturday.
The 53-year-old man and his 2-year-old son were in an inflatable boat on a pond at the wildlife area on Palm Avenue when the boy fell into the water, according to witnesses. The man jumped into the water to save his son and grabbed him, but was unable to get the boy or himself back into the boat.
Sergeant Jeff Young of the Butte County Sheriff's Department said when emergency personnel arrived at the scene shortly after 4:45 p.m., the man had been pulled to shore. Responders performed CPR but were unable to revive him and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child, who was still in the water when crews arrived at the pond, was retrieved and taken to Gridley Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter, said Young.
The boy was wearing a life vest at the time of the incident, but the father was not, Young said.
