RIPON, CA - A 4-year-old child escaped serious injury or worse when his father intentionally slammed his Honda into a utility pole Monday, according to Ripon police.
The child, and his mother who was also in the car, had minor injuries.
The father, 24-year-old David Allen Goulet, was arrested for attempted vehicular manslaughter, kidnapping, false imprisonment, and child cruelty charges, said police 1st Sgt. Steve Merchant.
The crash was preceded by an argument between Goulet and the woman on the 500 block of N. Stockton Avenue with the man grabbing the child and the child's mother jumping in the Honda as Goulet started driving away, Merchant said.
According to the mother, Goulet and she continued to argue with Goulet saying he was going to take all of their lives. She told police she realized her child wasn't buckled into the seatbelt and she had just buckled it when Goulet drove into the pole at Hammett Road near Salida and ran from the car.
With the impact of the deployed airbag the child was not breathing at first, said Merchant. That brought paramedics and the California Highway Patrol.
Goulet was spotted on Parallel Avenue in Ripon and captured without incident, Merchant said.
