SACRAMENTO - It's something that millions of unemployed workers across the country have been waiting a long time for; a job, even if it is just seasonal. And they're going to get their opportunity in the weeks ahead as big retailers prepare their armies of workers to take on the holiday rush.
Toys R Us plans to hire 45,000 seasonal workers across the country for the upcoming holiday season. That's more than 5,000 from last year, and 15 percent of the seasonal employees hired last year ended up working full-time at the toy retailer.
According to CNN Money, Kohl's will also be hiring, bringing in 52,700 seasonal workers, up 10 percent from last year. Walmart will hire about 50,000, and Target could end up hiring as many as 90,000 seasonal employees. In total, more than 700,000 people nationwide could find work this holiday season.
The jobs will average about $7 an hour, or about a $5,000 paycheck by the end of the holiday rush. That may not sound like much, but for the unemployed, any extra income is a big help.
