MODESTO, CA - A Modesto teen was arrested and taken to juvenile hall for arming himself with a loaded shotgun and threatening to kill his father early Monday morning, police say.
The youth was disarmed by his father.
The incident unfolded a little before 1:30 a.m. on the 2400 block of Southfork Lane, said police Lt. Rick Armendariz. Officers were dispatched to a family disturbance at a home there.
Police learned the mother in the home had awakened to a noise and went out to the living room to find her 16-year-old son with his father's loaded gun, Armendariz said. She screamed and that awakened her husband. As he came out, his son pointed the firearm at him and said he would kill him, Armendariz said.
The father was able to convince his son not to shoot. Armendariz said the father took the shotgun away from his boy and held him until officers arrived.
Police investigators learned the teen's alleged intent to kill his father was not a spur of the moment decision, Armendariz said. They determined the shotgun round had been stolen and he had taken other steps to carry out the shooting.
Armendariz described the youth as distraught and having a problem with substance abuse. He also threatened to take his own life.
