WATERFORD, CA - A 1-year-old girl died Monday afternoon when the Honda Civic she was a passenger in overturned and landed in an irrigation canal near Waterford.
The 1995 Civic was being driven by a 22-year-old woman on Lake Road east of Hawkins Road at 12:34 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer R. Ripley. According to the officer's investigation, the driver, who was traveling about 50 to 60 mph, let the car drift onto the north shoulder of the road. She turned to the right to get back onto the roadway when she lost control of the car and it veered back onto the shoulder, rolled over an unknown number of times before ending up in the water submerged.
Ripley reported the toddler, who was in the back seat, did not survive. The driver was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.
Also suffering major injuries was a second passenger, Paul Seutter, 22. He was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
All were from Modesto.
Ripley said it did not appear drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
