STOCKTON, CA - A child was killed in a 4-car pileup on eastbound Highway 4 in Stockton Friday afternoon.

As traffic slowed down on the highway around 3 p.m., the driver of a tow truck in the right lane did not notice that traffic slowed down in time to brake, California Highway Patrol Officer Angel Arceo said.

The driver of the tow truck, going 50 mph, failed to stop and hit a silver Ford Fusion, which got wedged to the front of the truck. The Ford had five occupants inside - two children and three adults.

Arceo said the Ford was pushed into a gold Lexus, which was pushed into the center lane and hit a Dodge Charger. The tow truck and the Ford veered off the road and onto the right shoulder.

A 3-year-old girl, who was seated in the left rear of the Ford died at the scene; a 4-year-old boy, seated in the middle rear, was air-lifted to UC Davis with major injuries. The driver, the right-rear passenger and the right-front passenger of the Ford suffered minor injuries.

The CHP collision report said both children in the Ford Fusion were belted, but were not in a child safety seat.

The driver of the Lexus and a 7-year-old boy passenger suffered minor injuries.

The tow truck driver also sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Charger was not injured.

CHP said drugs and/or alcohol did not appear to contribute to the crash.
