STOCKTON, CA - Police said a Stockton man who was in an 8-hour standoff with officers Thursday left a suicide note, then shot and killed himself.

Stockton police Officer Joe Silva said the man, identified as David Earl Barnett, 46, was found inside a home on the 2300 block of Golden Bear Circle Thursday night.

It was not known how long he had been dead.

Silva said the incident began around 1:33 p.m. when Barnett sped away from officers attempting to stop him for a traffic violation.

Police said Barnett fired several shots at officers before he ran and barricaded himself in his house.

More than a dozen neighbors were evacuated as law enforcement set up a three to four block radius around the home.

SWAT officers apparently tried communicating with Barnett around 5 p.m., but were unable to make contact with him.

A police robot was later sent into the home, where Barnett's body was discovered.

Investigators also found a suicide note inside of the home; they did not release the details of the note.
