SACRAMENTO, CA - California Highway Patrol said a drunk driver is responsible for killing two people in a head-on collision Thursday morning.
A family was driving south on Watt Avenue in Sacramento, when someone driving the wrong way slammed into them.
CHP arrested Raman Deep Gill, 23, and booked him into Sacramento County Jail.
CHP said Gill was heading north along South Watt Avenue near Tokay lane. Investigators said he told them he looked down at his phone and when he looked up he was in the southbound lane that's when he ran into a Toyota Corolla, killing the couple inside and injuring two passengers.
"He showed symptoms of intoxication, he was cooperative with officers for the most part," CHP spokesperson Michael Bradley said.
Court records show this was not Gill's first offense. He pleaded no contest in January 2011 for a DUI-related offense.
Thursday afternoon, his parents drove to the crash site to see the wreckage.
"We feel sorry for the victims, there are no words," Gill's mother Jagdish Gill said.
"This is an extremely tragic case and it was not that long ago, that he was arrested for this and it appears he's doing the same thing he was doing before so it's very tragic," MADD Representative Silas Miers said.
Gill pleaded no contest in January 2011 for a dui-related offense. He spent 10 days in jail for that offense. Bail is set for the current offense at $750,000.
