SACRAMENTO - Sacramento firefighters say arson was likely to blame for a fire that ravaged a home on the 1600 block of El Monte Avenue in Sacramento Thursday.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 5 a.m. and found the home fully involved, with flames shooting as high as 20 feet into the air.

Crews put out the fire before it spread to neighboring homes, but the house and its detached, two-story garage were extensively damaged.

The former owner of the property who ran a dental business out of the home, said he had spoken with the current owner who revealed the home was scheduled for demolition.

Neighbors said the house had recently become a den for transients, drug use and prostitution.

Firefighters did not reveal the specifics behind their speculation the fire was intentionally set.
