SACRAMENTO- An innocent bystander was shot and killed in midtown Sacramento early Saturday.
Sacramento police responded to 28th Street and J Street at 12:35 a.m. for reports of gunshots and a man who had been shot.
Officers found a man in his 30s in a parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died, according to Sgt. Andrew Pettit.
The victim was identified Sunday morning Joseph Long, 32, of Carmichael, according to Sacramento County Coroner's Office records.
Witnesses told police shots were fired during a fight between two groups near 28th and J streets. Based on detectives; preliminary investigation, it appeared the victim had no involvement in the dispute and was hit by rounds fired across the parking lot, Pettit said.
