Modesto man arrested following pursuit, 3-hour search

MODESTO, CA - A 20-year-old Modesto man was arrested on Thursday following a police pursuit and lengthy search.

According to Sergeant Anthony Bejaran of the Modesto Police Dept., deputies received information from the Oakdale Police Dept. regarding an outstanding warrant for Alex Merrill of Oakdale. Merrill was sought for charges of assault with a deadly weapon, a criminal street gang enhancement, vandalism and an being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

At approximately 9:28 p.m., Merrill was spotted by deputy Wade Carr in a white Toyota sedan he had allegedly stolen. Carr attempted to pull Merrill over at the intersection of Hatch Rd. and Crows Landing Rd., but Merrill sped off, said Bejaran.

Deputies pursued southbound on Crows Landing Rd. where Merrill wrecked at Grayson Rd. then fled on foot, Bejaran said.

Additional deputies and a Sheriff's Dept. helicopter were called in to help search for Merrill.

Merrill was located and arrested  on the outstanding warrant three hours later by a deputy and K9 officer.
