SACRAMENTO- The Sacramento Metro Fire Department is investigating a house fire on Whitney Ave. that firefighters suspect was started by arson.
Bat. Chief Steve Turner said firefighters were called to the home in the Arden-Arcade area just after 3:30 a.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, crews reported the single-story home was fully involved.
Requested backup arrived shortly thereafter to help battle the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent properties.
Assistance was also requested from the California Highway Patrol who provided traffic control on Whitney Ave. during containment efforts.
After extinguishing the fire, crews performed two searches of the property and found nobody inside.
According to Turner, Sac Metro crews originally suspected the cause of the fire had been attributable to copper wire theft because the home's electrical panel was damaged. But the ongoing investigation ruled out copper theft as a cause.
Arson investigators called to the scene said they believed the fire had been a result of arson and were conducting a full investigation, said Turner.
