SACRAMENTO - A man who died when a passing truck struck him as he stood by his pick-up on the shoulder of Interstate 80 Sunday night was identified as 64-year-old James Freeland Jr. of Sacramento.
The crash occurred at about 7:50 p.m. on eastbound I-80 near the Auburn Boulevard exit.
Officer Lizz Dutton with the California Highway Patrol said Freeland had pulled over on the righthand shoulder and was standing alongside his truck on the driver's side when a passing pick-up truck pulling a loaded trailer drifted into the shoulder, hitting him.
Dutton said the driver of the truck that hit Freeland was 43-year-old Howard Smith of Sacramento. He cooperated with investigators.
Dutton said it did not appear alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision.
Eastbound lanes were reopened two hours later.
