BAYFIELD, Wis. - Animal lovers worldwide have been moved by a photo in this video showing an affectionate moment between Wisconsin resident John Unger and his 19-year-old rescue dog, Schoep, as they swam together in Lake Superior.
The photographer, Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, is friends with Unger and set out to capture the bond between the man and his dog. Schoep has arthritis and will fall asleep during a soothing evening swim with his companion.
"My specialty is documenting relationships, whether it's a wedding or a man and his dog," Hudson told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. When she posted the photo to her Facebook page last week, the response was overwhelming. So far, it's received more than 230,000 likes, 25,000 comments and 134,000 shares.
"I know this is not about me -- it's about a guy who loves his dog -- but I am in complete awe that my photo has had such an impact," Hudson told the paper.
Since the photo went viral, donations have streamed in to help cover Schoep's veterinary care.
