SACRAMENTO, CA - Tuesday night is the annual National Night Out when neighbors meet in a friendly setting on their streets to build community awareness to help prevent crime.
Many communities have barbecues, ice cream socials and other activities planned. Neighbors turn on their porch lights in a show of solidarity.
In Sacramento County for example, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department has listed 67 planned gatherings (see accompanying .pdf)
Local law enforcement typically visits some of the neighborhoods to encourage community cooperation in the fight against crime.
