STOCKTON, CA - A 22-year-old man was found lying in the street near a central Stockton apartment complex Saturday night.

Stockton police responded to the 1000 block of S. Wilson Way around 10:30 p.m. after getting calls of a person shot and lying in the road near an apartment complex, Lt. Tom Jernigan said.

Someone in the neighborhood called police after hearing a banging noise, what they thought were gun shots, and then saw the man lying in the road.

Jernigan said after police arrived, they determined the man had not been shot, but was unresponsive with severe head injuries.

Police believe the man may have fallen out of a vehicle, but they don't know for sure, Jernigan said.

Officers are waiting to interview the victim once he is able to speak. He is in serious, but stable condition.
