STOCKTON, CA - Three young women are in hospital Wednesday after being shot on W. Third Street in Stockton.

Stockton police Officer Joe Silva said officers received a call of a home being shot up on the 300 block of W. Third Street around 2:43 a.m. While investigating the scene, three women, ages 17 to 20, were admitted to an area hospital with gunshot wounds.

Officers conducted an investigation of the incident, interviewed several individuals, and concluded the girls were in their car when an unknown number of people approached them on foot and opened fire, said Silva.

According to Silva, someone then drove the girls to the hospital in the shot-up car.

Two of the girls were listed in critical condition and the third was stable, said Silva.

The identities of the victims were not released.

In the afternoon, police executed two search warrants, one at a home at the scene of the shooting. Inside of the home, police seized a rifle, a bulletproof vest, and drugs.

As of Wednesday evening, police weren't offering descriptions of the gunmen or a possible motive for the attack. But neighbors said the house was visited by many people throughout the day. The neighbor said she assumed it was drug activity happening at the home.

Police spokesman Joe Silva also said Wednesday a man was in the car with the women at the time of the shooting. He said it wasn't clear if the man was possibly the target of the gunfire.

The triple shooting comes hours after Stockton recorded its 39th homicide of the year.
