CARMICHAEL, CA - A high-speed California Highway Patrol pursuit beginning in North Sacramento ended in a collision in Carmichael Tuesday.

Sgt. Lori Harmon with the California Highway Patrol said the incident began when officers pulled over a silver sedan with no license plates at Watt Avenue and Edison Avenue some time before 10 a.m.

The officer got out of his patrol car, approached the driver's window, and while speaking to him, the driver suddenly fled, said Harmon.

The officer returned to his vehicle and pursued. The chase moved toward the Carmichael area, but when the driver reached speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour, the officer abandoned the chase for public safety, Harmon said.

Shortly thereafter, the fleeing driver lost control of his car and hit a blue Toyota 4 Runner at Walnut Avenue.and Whitney Avenue, said Harmon.

According to Harmon, CHP officers arrived at the scene and found a passenger of the sedan pinned inside the vehicle. He was freed and arrested.

The driver, who had fled on foot, was located and arrested minutes later, said Harmon.

The driver of the 4 Runner was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Why the driver of the sedan took off in the first place wasn't clear.

The identities of both arrested individuals were withheld.
