VALLEJO, CA - The Superman Ultimate Flight rollercoaster at the Six Flags amusement park in Vallejo remains grounded after the ride stranded passengers 150 feet above the ground for nearly two hours Sunday.
"Laughing cracking jokes, looking at the view. I was just trying to keep calm. At one point I brought out my rosary," said passenger, Tevin Tavares.
Firefighters used a special crane to bring water to the passengers while they waited to roll backwards down the tracks. The crane is required by Cal/OSHA to reach riders at the highest point in case of an emergency.
Despite Sunday's malfunction, some rollercoaster fans hope get on Superman sometime soon.
"It would have been my first time riding and I was gonna go with my friend, too. I was really looking forward to it," said park visitor Amber Killian.
"I'm confident they'll fix it. When it's all squared away, we'll probably let a few people go on first to make sure it's running right," said park visitor Michelle Gonzales.
So far, the investigation does not point to a mechanical issue on the ride or on the tracks.
"Right now, they're continuing to do diagnostic testing and they'll continue that. Later on today, they'll continue to cycle the ride," said Nancy Chan, park manager.
The park will run the ride through cycles after hours.
Cal/OSHA's amusement ride unit is conducting an inspection. That inspection will include reviewing maintenance records and talking to ride operators. Until further notice, Six Flags plans to keep the Superman rollercoaster on the ground.
