TURLOCK, CA - The discovery of a car that was previously involved in a police pursuit, led to the shooting and death of a suspect in Turlock early Saturday morning.

At 6:19 a.m. Turlock Police located the vehicle at the 1100 block of North Golden Gate Boulevard that was involved in a pursuit on July 24, said Turlock police Sgt. Stephen Webb.

According to Webb, the suspect, Joseph Davis, approached the vehicle, but when officers attempted to contact Davis, he fled from officers.

Davis ran back to his vehicle and fled; eventually leading officers onto southbound Highway 99.

Officers could see that Davis was holding a handgun as he ran, Webb said.

After taking the Bradbury exit, Davis moved to the passenger seat and jumped from the car, said Webb.

With officers in pursuit, Davis attempted to car jack a vehicle that was driving west on Bradbury.

According to Webb, Davis into the vehicle and officers fired upon him in defense of the driver. They struck the suspect and he died at the scene.

One officer was struck in the leg and was transported to a local hospital. He was released soon after.
