HUGHSON, CA - Two men who died in a shooting in a Hughson home Wednesday had a long-running feud and may have died in an exchange of gunfire, according to a Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department's preliminary investigation.

Sheriff's deputies found Nick Kounias, 45, of Hughson, and John Szuggar, 52, of Hughson, dead inside a home on the 1800 block of 7th Street, said Deputy Raj Singh.

The incident began following a deputy pursuit of Szuggar in response to a report of a man in a truck armed with a handgun and threatening suicide. Szuggar led deputies to the 7th Street home of Kounias where he ran inside.

As deputies cordoned off the area, shots were heard from inside the home, Singh said.

A SWAT unit was called in and entered the home to discover the two men had been shot.

Investigators think Kounias may have fired his weapon in self defense. Szuggar used to be his neighbor.
