SACRAMENTO, CA - An unusual July lightning storm was likely responsible for more than 50 fires Monday morning, according to CAL Fire.

CAL Fire spokesperson Daniel Berlant said 2,000 lightning strikes were registered on Monday across the Northern California Sierra Nevada Crest region. According to Berlant, 50 fires were sparked as a probable result of those strikes, but all were contained to small spots.
Berlant said most of the fires were contained to small spots.
The largest fire was in Calaveras County, near Gopher Ridge, just south of Highway 4 near Copperopolis. The Gopher Fire grew to 75 acres and is 75 percent contained.
