SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - A 640-acre wildfire on California's Central Coast has forced evacuations of about 50 homes in rural San Luis Obispo County.

State fire spokeswoman Tina Rose says the fire covering about one square mile was burning Monday in grass, brush and oak woodlands, forcing the evacuation of homes on Parkhill Road near Highway 58 about five miles east of the town of Santa Margarita, where an elementary school has been opened as a shelter.

The evacuation order will remain in effect overnight.

More than 200 firefighters are battling the blaze with help from six aircraft. It was 20 percent contained.

Firefighters are being challenged by the fire's location in very rough terrain.

Wind gusts up to 21 mph are being reported in the area and temperatures were in the mid-70s.
