FAIR OAKS, CA - An elderly woman was found dead in her Fair Oaks home Sunday night in what sheriff's deputies described as a "bizarre" homicide.
According to Deputy Jason Ramos of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, a man returned to his Durland Way home Sunday evening to find a shirtless man inside the house. The homeowner chased the intruder out of the house and down the street where he fled into another home at 7800 Olympic Way.
Deputies arrived at the house on Olympic Way around 7:30 p.m. and the man ran out of the property naked and covered in blood, said Ramos.
He was taken into custody and deputies entered the Olympic Way property to investigate. Once inside, deputies discovered 79-year-old Carole Jane Sturgis, dead from an apparent savage attack, Ramos said.
The suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Moses Trotter, was booked into jail on a charge of homicide.
Trotter is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on murder charges.
He has a lengthy criminal past dating back to 1999. His convictions range from grand theft to robbery, vehicle theft to assault-and-battery, and resisting arrest.
Neighbors described Sturgis as being the kindest person they knew. She was wellknown for taking care of people and pets in the area and lived in her home for more than 40 years.
"She took care of everybody around here," said neighbor and friend Jim Blom. "Their animals, the cats and took my garbage cans in at night - every night for years."
