MODESTO, CA - A Modesto police officer shot a man who was armed with a knife, according to the Modesto Police Department.
The incident began at approximately 2:30 Thursday afternoon. Officers were following up on a case on the 1200 block of E. Muirswood Way, said Lt. Rick Armendariz.
As the two officers contacted the 68-year-old man, he displayed a knife and responding to the threat, one of the officers fired his gun, striking the man, Armendariz said.
The man underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical but stable condition.
Armendariz did not know how many times or where the man was shot.
The officers were not hurt.
The officer who fired his weapon was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation into what happened.
The name of the suspect will not be released untill he has been booked into the Stanislaus County Jail.
