STOCKTON, CA - One person is dead and five were arrested following an officer-involved shooting in Stockton early Thursday morning.
According to Det. Joe Silva of the Stockton Police Department, officers were investigating a non-life threatening shooting of a woman on the 6800 block of N. Plymouth Road Wednesday night when they received another call of people in a van shooting at another vehicle.
Officers arrived at the scene and spotted the van, which immediately fled, leading police on a high-speed chase up and down Interstate 5. At some point during the pursuit, individuals in the van began shooting at the pursuing officers, Silva said.
Upon culmination of the chase around 2 a.m. in the Lewis Park area of Mt. Diablo and Ryde Avenue, the individuals in the van again shot at officers, Silva said.
The officers returned fire, killing one person and wounding another. A third individual was taken into custody, but two men were able to escape and flee on foot into an adjacent neighborhood, said Silva.
SWAT was subsequently deployed to the area and began a door-to-door search for the two "armed and dangerous" men, Silva said.
Several individuals were later located in a home around 6:25 a.m. and detained for questioning.
According to Silva, an assault rifle and two handguns were recovered in the area.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The man shot and killed was identified Thursday as Joseph Brooks, 27. He was a parolee at large, according to authorities.
The wounded man, Darold Jarvis, 24,the driver of the van, was treated for his injury and arrested. Police say he was a wanted felon on probation.
Also arrested were Darance Leav, 19, and Kevin Ou, 24, both passengers in the van and documented gang members, police say.
Armendariz said Jarvis, Leav and Ou were booked into San Joaquin County Jail on homicide and other felony charges.
In addition, Jeremy Gutierrez, 30, who was found by the SWAT team, was arrested on parole charges. The other man located by SWAT, Chanda Uy, 23, is a felon wanted on a criminal bench warrant. He was also arrested. Police say both men are documented gang members and they were also booked into jail.
All of the suspects are from Stockton.
Police investigators were looking into whether the maroon van in the pursuit was connected to a maroon van described in another crime earlier in the evening.
Seven officers involved in the shooting have been placed on three days of paid administrative leave. They are Sgt. Matthew Garlick, Officer Gary Donaldson, Officer John Hernandez, Officer James Manor, Officer Jared McCall, Officer Anabel Morris and Officer Bernie Tapia.
