SACRAMENTO, CA - One person is dead and two people are in the hospital after a big rig caused a 3-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 Thursday evening.

At 6:28 p.m., a big rig travelling northbound on I-5 hit a disabled car that was blocking a lane near Airport Road, California Highway Patrol officer Todd Van Lindt said. The collision forced the stalled car to hit two more vehicles and killed the driver, 79-year-old Franklin R. Penirian.

According to Van Lindt, people in the other two vehicles suffered minor to moderate injuries; two were transported to UC Davis Medical Center treatment.

The driver of the big rig was ok, Van Lindt said.

Officers continue to investigate the crash and look for more evidence to determine if the driver of the big rig will be charged in death of the elderly man.
