SACRAMENTO, CA - Sacramento police officers shot a pit bull while chasing a suspect Thursday afternoon.

Officers were conducting a probation search on the 3700 block of 18th Avenue around 2:15 p.m. when the man they were looking for fled on foot, Sgt. Andrew Pettit said.

During the chase, the officers were attacked by a pit bull; the suspect then jumped a fecne to elude them. Pettit said one officer fired a shot at the dog; the animal then attacked the second officer, who also fired a shot. The pit bull was hit at least once by officers.

The dog was taken by animal control personnel that were at the scene.

The suspect was later found hiding after officers set up a perimeter, Pettit said.

The condition of the dog is unclear at this time.
