SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Right-hander Brad Penny has agreed to terms on a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants as a candidate to help in the bullpen.

Penny, who briefly pitched for the Giants down the down the stretch in 2009 and went 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six starts, is scheduled to report to extended spring training in Arizona on Monday. He threw a bullpen session Friday afternoon at AT&T Park for Giants general manager Brian Sabean, manager Bruce Bochy and pitching coach Dave Righetti.

Penny, 33, went 11-11 with a 5.30 ERA in 31 starts last season for Detroit. He signed with the Japan Pacific League's Softbank Hawks, going 0-1 with a 10.08 ERA in one start before getting released earlier this month.
